The Government has decided to withdraw its earlier press release on amendments in guidelines for accreditation of journalists on the issue of fake news which had led to a widespread debate.

The Prime Minister has directed the Ministry to withdraw the press release regarding fake news and that the matter should only be addressed at the Press Council of India. The Information & Broadcasting then said it is withdrawing its press release issued on April 2.

Information & Broadcasting Minister Smriti Irani tweeted: “PIB Accreditation Guidelines asking Press Council of India & News Broadcasters Association to define & act against ‘fake news’ have generated debate. Several journalists & organisations have reached out giving positive suggestions regarding the same.”

“@MIB_India is more than happy to engage with journalist body or organisation/s wanting to give suggestions so that together we can fight the menace of ‘fake news’ & uphold ethical journalism. Interested journalists and/or organisations may feel free to meet me at @MIB_India,” she added.

In its statement on Monday, the Ministry had said that based on the determination process by bodies such as the Press Council of India and News Broadcasters’ Association , journalists (if accredited) found to be involved in creating or propagating fake news would lose their accreditation from six months to an year. In the event of the third violation, it had proposed suspending the accreditation permanently.
