When Madras was renamed Chennai in 1996, it was not just a name change that affected one city — it meant that a board that said “Madras: 2,095 km” in New Delhi had to be repainted and somebody from Japan had to use the new name while posting a letter to Tamil Nadu's capital. And just as renaming a city has global repercussions, a new rupee symbol also changes a lot of things.
For example:
PCs & laptops : While a keyboard with the rupee symbol is ideal, you can also use software to get the symbol
Mobiles : Manufacturers need a standard to use the rupee symbol in SMSes which may be sent worldwide
Printers : You should be able to print the rupee symbol worldwide
Readers : Bar code and credit card readers should be able to input and output the symbol
Braille : The visually impaired will need a way to determine the rupee symbol by touch
Ticketing machines : The Railways and movie theatres will have to incorporate the symbol in tickets
Speech synthesisers: A text-to-speech converter has to properly interpret the rupee symbol so that it can pronounce it correctly.
