The number of smartphones in the country has touched the 300-million mark, with at least half of these in the lower end and having very low processing power and limited memory.

This prevents most of the users, who are non-English, from tapping the vast amounts of mobile content, especially in the gaming arena.

To address this problem, Bengaluru-based start-up, Happy Adda, has created a gaming app for users of low-end phones. It offers Word Search, Word Hunt, 4 letters, Ludo, Snake and Ladders and Desi Quiz in 10 languages, including Tamil, Hindi, Malayalam, Bengali and Telugu. The free-to-play games get about three lakh users a day, with each spending an average 20 minutes.

“We are developing mobiles games with a focus on these users and are offering them under the Jalebi brand on Google Play, iOS and third-party platforms. All of the six games require just 14 MB of space, considering the limitations of a low-end smartphone,” Raja Sekhar Vasa, Co-Founder of Happy Adda Studios, told BusinessLine on the sidelines of the Global Entrepreneurship Summit.

The start-up is among about 100 promising ventures selected for the showcase at the three-day event that concluded on Thursday.

Seeing the potential in the business idea, Google funded $50,000 as part of its Developers Launchpad Accelerator Programme. “We have not raised any funds so far. We are in talks to raise $4 million,” he said.

The start-up Vasa co-founded with Narasimha Reddy has 12 employees. He is planning to add 10 more games in the next six months.
