Coolpad, a Chinese smartphone maker, will be setting up a research and development and design centre in India in the next few months as it rolls out $300-million investment plan for India.

To house about 200 employees, the proposed R&D and design centre is likely to come up in Bengaluru. “It will act as an important global hub for our firm,” Syed Tajuddin, Chief Executive Officer of Coolpad in India, said.

He was here in connection with the launch of its smartphone Coolpad Note 3. Priced at ₹8,999, the phone comes with fingerprint scanner technology. It is being exclusively sold on Amazon. It sold one lakh phones so far, with five lakh people registering their names to buy the phone.

The 5.5-inch phone comes with 3GB RAM and 16 GB of internal storage. It supports 4G LTE, 3G and GSM network frequencies. The dual-SIM phone has 13 mega pixel rear camera.

The CEO said though the phones are sold online, there was a plan to open offline stores in top cities. “These are going to be exclusive showrooms,” he said.

Ties up with Videocon The firm has tied up with Videocon to produce phones at its Aurangabad (Maharashtra) facility. It is looking at selling 50 lakh handsets by the end of 2016. It is also planning to bring in wearables (IoT products) next year.
