After feature phones, Intex Technologies is set to manufacture smartphones and tablets in the country.
The company expects to come up with its first home-made smartphone by December, Keshav Bansal, Intex’s Director Marketing for mobile phones, said at a media event here on Friday.
It will be priced under Rs 10,000. All of the company’s smartphones are currently shipped from China.
Earlier this year, Intex started manufacturing its ‘Platinum’ series of feature phones at its plants in Baddi (Himachal Pradesh) and Jammu.
Intex is also testing a new tablet, to be based on the Mediatek chipset, for manufacturing in India, Sanjay Sumar Kalirona, Head-Mobile business, said.
Local manufacturing has lately become a key issue in India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday launched his pet “Make in India” campaign in order to place India on the global manufacturing map and create millions of new jobs.
