US-based telecommunications major Motorola will unveil its affordable smartphone ‘Moto E’ tomorrow, in partnership with online retailing major Flipkart, to take on Samsung and Nokia.

Moto E is expected to be launched in the sub-Rs 12,000 category in India and the UK simultaneously.

This would be Motorola’s third device in India, after Moto G and Moto X, to be launched exclusively on the online platform. In February this year, Motorola re-entered the Indian market after a nearly two-year hiatus with Moto G.

Moto E is said to have 4.3-inch screen, 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 1 GB RAM, 5 MP camera and 1,900 mAh battery.

Flipkart, which has seen huge success with Moto G and Moto X, is keen on a long-term relationship with Motorola.

Its co-founder and CEO Sachin Bansal had earlier told PTI: “Definitely, I think both Motorola and Flipkart are seeking a long-term relationship. Sure, I think we do see and actually hope that we do get to do more such things together.”

Smartphone sales in the country grew almost three-fold to over 44 million in 2013, buoyed by a strong uptake of affordable devices made by local firms such as Micromax and Karbonn, according to research firm IDC.

While Samsung led the category with 38 per cent share, Micromax had 16 per cent, Karbonn (10 per cent), Sony (5 per cent) and Lava (4.7 per cent) in the fourth quarter of 2013.

India was one of the fastest-growing markets worldwide in terms of smartphone adoption in 2013, says IDC data.
