MTS India will launch its own branded tablet personal computers and smartphone devices by December. The devices will run on its 3G plus network that offers a speed of 9.8 mbps.

The company hopes to score over its competitors by offering a combination of its own device with ‘high speed data at a lower cost,’ according to Suresh S. Kumar, Chief Operating Officer, Tamil Nadu Circle, MTS India, which belongs to Sistema Shyam Teleservices Ltd. “This combo offer is going to be very critical for us going forward,” he told newspersons.

If a customer wishes to change the operator but continue to use the MTS device, the speed may not be at 9.8 mbps, he said.

While the cost of the tablet PC is yet to be finalised, the smartphone could be priced between Rs 7,000 and Rs 10,000, according to Viraj Chouhan, Corporate Communication Director, MTS India.

The company will import the Android-based devices from China, he said.

Chouhan hopes the combo offer will help the company reach out to the youth that uses data service to a large segment. At present, 34 per cent of revenue for MTS comes from data and this is expected to reach nearly 50 per cent by 2014, he said.
