A national seminar on topic ‘E-Waste, A Question of Future’ titled ‘Collabre’ organised by city based St.Joseph’s College will be held here on October 15.
Speaking to reporters here today, Fr Benny Sebastian, Principal, St Joseph’s College said disposal of e-waste has emerged as one of the most important threats to public health and global environment
In India, most waste electronic items are stored in homesteads as people do not know how to dispose it, he said, adding in India around 25,000 workers, including children, are involved in crude dismantling units in Delhi alone where 10000 to 20,000 tonne e-waste is handled every year by bare hands.
Improper dismantling and processing of e-wastage render it perilous to human health as electronic goods contains toxic substances, he said.
To limit environmental and health risks, e-waste should be disposed of adequately and separately from other types of organic wastes, he said.
Dr Kurian Joseph , Professor, Environmental Engineering, Anna University, Chennai would present a paper on ‘e-waste as a challenge’, while Dr Sunil D Santha, Professor, TISS, Mumbai would present a paper on ‘e-waste-health and environmental hazards’, he said.
