Only 20 employees (out of the total 1,300) of Foxconn have opted for the severance package offered by the company, which has suspended production at its Sriperumbudur factory, according to union representatives.
Today was the last day for accepting the Voluntary Retirement Scheme or severance package offered by the company suspending production from December 22, 2014.
Sources said that two days ago a secret ballot by the union was held to gauge the mood of employees as to whether they would opt for the package or stay with the company. A majority of them said they would like to stay with the company, which suspended production due to poor orders.
Foxconn’s plant was supplying over 70 per cent of parts to the Chennai unit of the telecom major Nokia, which has shut down.
Union sources said they “do not know what will be the company’s further action.”
Five rounds of talks between union and company management to find a solution to open the plant failed.
