Swamy seeks Chidambaram's resignation

It definitely was not the Home Minister, Mr P. Chidambaram's day.

While Mr Chidambaram chose to remain silent on the developments that took place in the Special Court, Dr Subramanian Swamy, the Janata Party President, termed the Court order as a “major step forward”.

Welcoming the order that allowed him to depose as a witness on his complaint against the alleged role of Mr Chidambaram in the 2G case, Dr Swamy sought Mr Chidambaram's resignation from his Cabinet post.

Backing the opposition BJP's demand for Mr Chidambaram's resignation, Dr Swamy told Business Line that he (Mr Chidambaram) should not stand on technicalities and should resign immediately as mere apprehension against him was enough.

“Even though he has not been made an accused, the fact that a man who is heading a Ministry to catch thieves is himself being considered as a thief should be enough to make him resign on his own. I had earlier sought his resignation and today also I say the same,” Dr Swamy said.

On the issue of Harvard University reportedly taking off courses taught by him there, Dr Swamy said it was a dangerous trend and a “fall in Harvard's standard”. “If they had any complaint on my writings, they should have first asked what I have to say on it.”

Parliament disrupted

Meanwhile, Parliament proceedings were disrupted by the Opposition as they sought Mr Chidambaram's resignation.

However, the Law Minister, Mr Salman Khurshid, turned down the Opposition's demand saying the Special Court order did not have any specific observations against Mr Chidambaram or the Government.
