The wheat market witnessed a downtrend with prices of both dara and desi wheat varieties decreasing by Rs 25-350 a quintal at the Karnal grain market terminal on Tuesday.

Heavy arrivals dragged prices of dara wheat down by Rs 25 and ruled at Rs 1,175, against the levels of Rs 1,200 a quintal quoted last weekend.

Around 800 tonnes of dara variety arrived from Utter Pradesh and the stocks were directly offloaded at the mills. Mill delivery was at Rs 1,175 a quintal, while it traded at Rs 1,180 at the retail market.

Mr Sewa Ram, a wheat trader, told Business Line that heavy arrivals and slack demand pulled wheat prices down. The market may rule firm on current levels for next few days and then prices may recover, he added.

After witnessing a downtrend last weekend, desi wheat dropped further by Rs 35-350 a quintal. Around 200 tonnes of different varieties of desi wheat arrived from Madhya Pradesh.

Tohfa variety decreased by Rs 35 and ruled at 2,200 a quintal, Bhojan King dropped by 90 and quoted at Rs 2,100, Lal Quila decreased by Rs 150 and was at Rs 1,900, while Nokia dropped by Rs 55 and traded at Rs2,000 a quintal. Maruti and Kamal brand witnessed the major fall, Maruti dropped by Rs 350 and quoted at Rs1,650, while Kamal decreased by Rs 200 and was at 1,800 a quintal.

Flour Prices

Following decrease in wheat prices, flour prices dropped by Rs 10 and quoted at Rs 1,200 for a 90kg bag. On the other hand, Chokar prices witnessed a steady trend and quoted at Rs 590 for a 49 kg bag.
