Poor quality of arrivals continued to keep turmeric prices below ₹6,500 a quintal.

“Traders have received some demand from upcountry markets, but since the quality of arrival was poor and medium, they quoted lower prices. Traders procured over 250 bags of hybrid finger, but offered below ₹7,000 a quintal. The current price is lower than last week,” said RKV Ravishankar, President, Erode Turmeric Merchants Association.

Of the 2,000 bags that arrived on Tuesday, 1,090 were sold.

Traders said that they are expecting higher demand from North India. They also said that though the ongoing turmeric season gets over by December, this year the yellow spice may continue to arrive even in the first week of December.

The hybrid finger variety price increased by ₹350 a quintal but the price of the finger variety was down by ₹200 in Erode and Gobichettipalayam Cooperative Marketing Socialites auction centres.

At the Erode Turmeric Merchants Association sales yard, the finger turmeric was sold at ₹4,099-6,334 a quintal. The root variety was sold at ₹3,706-5,577.

Salem Hybrid: The finger turmeric was sold at ₹5,481-6,909, the root variety at ₹4,606-5,751. Of the 614 bags that arrived, 126 were sold.

At the Regulated Market Committee, the finger variety fetched ₹5,439-6,320. The root variety was sold at ₹5,119-5,920. Of the 442 bags that arrived, 226 were picked up.

At the Erode Cooperative Marketing Society, the finger variety was sold at ₹5,418-6,051 a quintal, the root variety at ₹4,890-5,839. Of the 123 bags put up for sale, 98 found takers.

At the Gobichettipalayam Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Society, the finger turmeric was sold at ₹5,242-6,266, the root variety at ₹4,789-5,636. All the 68 bags of turmeric on sale were traded.
