Markets reversed their morning gains to trade in negative territory by midday Wednesday, with the Sensex declining 242.73 points to 81,340.57 and the Nifty falling 60.35 points to 24,793.05 as of 12.36 PM.
The benchmark indices opened lower than their previous close, with the Sensex starting at 81,314.62 against its previous close of 81,583.30, while the Nifty opened at 24,788.35 compared to its previous close of 24,853.40. The downward trend has persisted through the midday session, with the Sensex down 0.30 per cent and the Nifty declining 0.24 per cent.
Market breadth remained weak across the broader market, with 2,207 stocks declining against 1,585 advancing issues on the BSE out of 3,985 stocks traded. The broader market indices also reflected the negative sentiment, with the Nifty Midcap 100 falling 271.45 points to 58,098.85, marking a decline of 0.46 per cent.
Despite the overall negative trend, IndusInd Bank emerged as the top gainer on the Nifty 50, surging 4.86 per cent to 848.50. The banking stock was followed by Trent, which gained 1.57 per cent to 5,715.00. Eicher Motors advanced 1.34 per cent to 5,412.50, while Maruti Suzuki climbed 1.20 per cent to 12,746.00. Mahindra & Mahindra rounded out the top gainers with a 1.17 per cent increase to 3,042.30.
On the losing side, Adani Ports led the declines with a 1.46 per cent drop to 1,372.00. Nestle India fell 1.31 per cent to 2,331.10, while Hindustan Unilever declined 1.23 per cent to 2,300.00. IT major TCS dropped 1.17 per cent to 3,474.20, and Adani Enterprises lost 0.98 per cent to 2,464.00.
Sectoral performance showed mixed trends, with the Nifty Bank index managing to stay in positive territory with a marginal gain of 63.30 points to 55,776.30. However, the Nifty Financial Services index declined 80.70 points to 26,371.90, while the Nifty Next 50 fell 207.30 points to 66,789.60.
Market volatility remained elevated with 184 stocks hitting upper circuit limits while 208 stocks touched lower circuit boundaries. Additionally, 69 stocks reached their 52-week highs while 50 touched 52-week lows, indicating mixed investor sentiment across different segments of the market.
The afternoon session will be crucial as investors await further cues from global markets and domestic developments ahead of the market close.
