Equity benchmark indices traded lower on Friday’s mid trading session amid geopolitical concerns in Middle East and a sharp spike in Brent crude oil prices.

Sensex tanked 656.65 pts or 0.80 per cent to 81,035.33 as at 1.30 pm after hitting a low of 80,354.59, and Nifty 50 depreciated 187.65 pts or 0.75 per cent to 24,700.55.

Both midcap and smallcap indexes slipped 0.78 per cent and 0.89 per cent, respectively. Volatility index zoomed 8 per cent to 15.14. 

On the sectoral front, banking, financials, metal and realty stocks fell over 1 per cent, while the IT index traded with marginal gains. Defence index also inched up close to 1 per cent with Unimech leading the gainers.

Top gainers & losers today

Shares of ONGC, Tech Mahindra, Bharat Electronics, Wipro and Sun Pharma traded as major gainers of Nifty 50 pack, while Adani Ports, Adani Enterprises, SBI, Bajaj Finserv and Trent were major laggards.  

SBI, IndusInd, PNB and HDFC Bank stocks depreciated close to 2 per cent among Nifty Bank.

Max Health, Jubilant Foodworks, Oil India, Cochin Shipyard and Muthoot Finance gained up to 2 per cent among midcap, while IREDA, NMDC, IGL, Union Bank and Exide Industries fell 2-4 per cent.

In addition, stocks of oil marketing companies, aviation, paints, adhesives and tyres witnessed significant selling pressure.

Among smallcap, The Great Eastern Shipping Company, Narayana Hrudayalaya, Karur Vysya Bank, Zen Technologies and Data Patterns soared 2-5 per cent, while TTML, Reliance Power, Angel One, IDBI and PNB Housing declined 2-6 per cent.

Only 728 stocks advanced and 1,981 stocks declined of all the 2,777 stocks that were traded on the National Stock Exchange. 36 stocks such as AstraZeneca, DB Realty and Force Motors hit 52-week high, and 31 stocks such as Easy Trip Planners, Protean eGov hit 52-week low.

Defence stocks Zen Technologies and Unimech were among 42 stocks that hit the upper circuit. 71 stocks including Websol Energy hit the lower circuit. 

On the BSE, Jubilant Ingrevia and SCI zoomed 12-13 per cent. Dhani Services, Ideaforge and D B Realty soared 6-8 per cent. On the flip side, GTL Infra, HCC, Tata Teleservices, SEPC and Subex tanked 5-9 per cent.
