The financial services division of India Post, Western region, Tamil Nadu, is expected to get a facelift as soon as the head post offices get hooked to the core banking solution (CBS) platform and ATMs are installed.

The project is nearing completion.

In the first phase, the 21 head post offices (HOs) in this region — comprising eight districts — are to be hooked on to the CBS platform. “All the HOs are computerised. Of the 623 sub-post offices, 351 have been computerised and 209 are nearing completion of computerisation process. Work on the remaining 42 post offices would be complete in the next fiscal,” Western Region Post Master General, India Post, Mr V. Rajarajan, told Business Line .

Besides the HOs and sub-post offices, there are over 2,400 branch post offices in this region. The department is planning to upgrade a couple of branches to SPOs, he said. “We have not closed down any post office. We have only merged the Kodumanal branch in Erode with Uthukuli RS Post Office.”

The department has identified the HOs for installation of the ATMs.

On performance, Mr Rajarajan said: “Our savings bank account target for this fiscal is Rs 78.86 crore against Rs 69.62 crore in the last fiscal. As at end February, we achieved Rs 71.18 crore. We have only a couple of days left this fiscal, but we are on track. We hope to achieve the target.”

Dormant accounts

He conceded that there were some dormant accounts and the department was trying to revive these. The live accounts as at end February stood at 50.32 lakh. “We are uploading and cleansing the data,” he added.

On the region's business development division's performance, he said: “We have achieved 86 per cent of the total target of Rs 30.17 crore fixed for this region. While we have surpassed the target in certain product services such as speed post, bill mail service, logistics post, ePost and direct post, there have been some grey areas that we are trying to address and improve performance.”
