The number of cases pending at Debt Recovery Tribunals (DRTs) is on the increase. And it is not just at Coimbatore DRT, where cases are heard only for two days in a month, but in Madurai too, in spite of it having a Presiding Officer at the helm.

The PO of the DRT in Madurai, Harinarayana, has been holding additional charge of the DRT in Coimbatore for at least a year now. “When he comes here, cases are heard and there is some movement of files.

But we noticed that all cases are getting adjourned at Madurai DRT (where he sits for the rest of the days in the month) for administrative reasons — lack of staff,” industry sources told Business Line . While the total number of pending cases at Coimbatore DRT (excluding fresh filing) is a little over 1,100, at Madurai DRT, it is said to have mounted to 4,102.
