Bandhan-Konnagar, a non-profit organisation of the Bandhan group, is looking to provide financial support to close to 3 lakh underprivileged families under its ‘Targeting Hardcore Poor’ (THP) programme in the next five years.

According to Chandra Shekhar Ghosh, founder and mentor, Bandhan Konnagar, the NGO is set to receive World Bank funding support for the same. As many as 70,000 families have benefited from the THP programme so far.

Expansion plans

“The World Bank wants us to scale up the programme in Rajasthan, Bihar, Jharkhand and Odisha. We hope to be able to bring close to 3 lakh underprivileged families under this programme in the next five years,” Ghosh told newspersons on the sidelines of the Development Day celebration of Bandhan Konnagar here on Wednesday.

The THP programme has been implemented in Assam, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, Odisha, Telengana, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Tripura. The State governments of Rajasthan and Jharkhand have already tied up with Bandhan-Konnagar, providing them financial support for the implementation of the programme in certain districts.

Funding support

The NGO spends ₹25,000-30,000 per family on an average during the 24-month programme. Apart from World Bank funding support, Bandhan Bank has earmarked close to 2 per cent of its CSR spend on the programme. It also receives funding support from corporates such as ITC, HDFC and Indigo.

Under the THP programme, the NGO identifies hardcore poor families who have not had access to traditional finance initiatives and provides them with a productive livelihood asset such as poultry, handicrafts, sewing machine or helps them set up a shop, thereby creating opportunity for sustainable living.
