The Kerala unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has said that it will wait to see the Supreme Court judgment on the Sabarimala in detail before coming forth with an official comment.

According to PS Sridharan Pillai, BJP president of the State unit, undermining temple traditions and rituals observed by devotees for hundreds of years is not good.

“The State government should appreciate the sensitivities involved, and be guarded in its response to the emerging situation,” Pillai said. The Left Democratic Front (LDF) government in Kerala said it was committed to implement the verdict.

Pillai took exception to the statement of Devaswom Minister Kadakampally Surendran about allowing ‘entry to women of all ages’ into the temple. He warned the Minister against doing anything that converts the shrine into a conflict zone of beliefs and ideologies.

“The ruling CPI(M)’s attempt to foment trouble at the temple will not succeed. It is in its best interests not to precipitate matters. The Devaswom Board (temple administration), too, needs to be vigilant here,” Pillai added.

“Any attempt to politicise the issue will be countered at all costs,” Pillai said.
