The West Bengal Government is planning to set up three new IT parks in north Bengal to develop the State’s IT infrastructure.

Currently, the State has 22 IT parks, with occupancy ranging between 80 per cent and 100 per cent.

“We are now focusing on development of IT infrastructure in north Bengal in a big way. There are three IT parks in Siliguri, and all of them are functional with 100 per cent occupancy. It has encouraged us to set up three more IT parks in north Bengal,” said Babul Supriyo, Minister for Information Technology and Electronics, West Bengal, on Friday.

The Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) has already started work to set up the new IT park in Kurseong, while the construction of another IT park at Kalimpong is set to begin soon.

“A place around Deolo Hill for the IT park at Kalimpong has already been identified and work will begin soon. We are also planning for another IT Park in Jalpaiguri,” Supriyo said.

The government is also planning to build a new IT park in Chinsurah, South Bengal.

Speaking at the 16th edition of Business IT Conclave, organised by The Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCC&I) in association with World Trade Center NDITA, Anoop Kumar Agrawal, Additional Chief Secretary, Department of IT and Electronics, said, “From Government of West Bengal, apart from taking care of physical infrastructures, we are creating Centres of Excellence which are open, accessible and flexible through our approach. Labour issues have been solved through IT&E Department.”

“We have a hardware park in Sonarpur where land is available to be allotted at competitive rate. Bengal Silicon Valley has been launched recently. Many companies have started construction. The IT Department is coordinating with these companies and this is going to boost employment and the economy of the State,” Agrawal added.

During the event, Saket Mohta, Vice Chairman of World Trade Center NDITA and Managing Director of Merlin Group, spoke about the vision behind developing the first World Trade Center in eastern India and West Bengal. He highlighted WTC NDITA’s role in spearheading sustainable infrastructure in IT and ITeS.
