Installation of closed circuit television network can be a way out to tackle drugs network in educational institutions. This was one of the suggestions received by the Petitions Committee of Karnataka Legislative Assembly in Mangalore.

Addressing presspersons after the committee’s meeting on Thursday, Mr Yogish Bhat, chairman of the Petitions Committee of Karnataka Legislative Assembly, said that issues related to drugs menace in educational institutions came up for discussion at the meeting.

One of the suggestions was installation of CCTVs in schools and colleges. This will help identify elements involved in drugs peddling in educational institutions.

Mr Appachchu Ranjan, Member of the Petitions Committee of Karnataka Legislative Assembly, said that many educational institutions in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts are affected by drugs menace. The video recording would help tackle the menace in an efficient manner, he said.

Mr Bhat said there was also a suggestion to strengthen dog squad in police department. In addition to this, the meeting felt the need for making effective utilisation of drugs cell in the police department.

A joint meeting of the health department, police department and drugs controller will be conducted soon to elicit more information on controlling drugs menace in the State.

Mr Bhat said that the Police Department has been asked to submit its suggestions on controlling drugs menace in educational institutions. Based on that, the Petitions Committee will submit its recommendations to the Legislative Assembly.

The Karnataka legislative session is scheduled to begin on July 15, he added.
