A group of engineering students from Kerala has bagged the top honours at a recent ‘hackathon’ held in Bangalore.
A 23-member student development team represented Startup Village in Kochi, a telecom incubator to groom start-up ventures and also promote innovation among students.
Technopark, Thiruvananthapuram-based Innoz Technologies, organised the event for its mobile platform. The hackathon was a 36-hour-long competition for budding programmers.
The student group from Kerala developed novel applications which cater to varied needs of the public, a spokesman for the event said.
The entry that won the first prize was an app that helps students to know exactly how many classes they have bunked and how many they should attend to be eligible for writing exams.
'Bunklog'
Named ‘Bunklog,’ this brought the first prize to Anirudhan Adukkathayar from College of Engineering, Thiruvananthapuram.
He won a cash prize worth Rs 35,000, and beat nearly 200 applications developed by 120 hackers drawn from across the country, to it.
With strict minimum requirement attendance rules in most colleges, ‘Bunklog’ can work wonders for students, the jury said.
The second prize, carrying a cash prize of Rs 15,000, also went to another Kerala team member John Sebastian Perayil from Government Model Engineering College, Kochi, for an app that dealt with text message encryption.
'Cipher'
Named Cipher, the application allows users to encrypt messages for complete privacy. It can prove useful when confidential information needs to be exchanged via SMS.
The most popular app prize went to Jayadeep S of MG University College of Engineering, Thodupuzha, and Nitin of RIT, Kottayam.
Their app helps people access a database of blood donors from their respective areas along with their contact numbers.
