A body representing the fishing community has strongly opposed the Maharashtra Government’s proposed Passenger Water Transport (PWT) system from Nariman Point in south Mumbai to Borivili in the western suburbs.

“The proposed water transport system on the western sea coast will hamper fishing in the sea. Tender process for the project was completed without taking the fishing community into confidence,” Akhil Maharashtra Machhimar Kriti Samiti (AMMKS) President Damodar Tandel said at a press meet here.

The fishing community will oppose the water transport as and when it starts, he added.

The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation Ltd is implementing the project, which envisages creating a water transport network between Nariman Point and Borivali with terminals at Bandra, Juhu, Versova and Marve and give commuters an option to travel on catamarans and hovercraft.

“Catamaran and hovercraft boats will destroy the fishing nets in the sea,” he alleged.
