Passenger traffic at Mangaluru International Airport recorded a growth of 33.71 per cent in 2017-18.

Addressing mediapersons on Tuesday, VV Rao, Director of Mangaluru International Airport, said the airport handled 2.34 million passengers in 2017-18 as against 1.75 million in 2016-17.

He said the airport is likely to handle 3 million passengers during 2018-19 if the current growth in passenger traffic is any indication. The number of flight operations per day, which is 60 at present, is likely to reach 80 in the coming months, he said.

Stating that AAI has taken up major expansion of the terminal building, he said the area of the terminal building will be enhanced by 1.5 times of the existing area in the coming two years.

Two more passenger boarding bridges will be added in the coming months, and another two passenger boarding bridges will be built along with the expansion project.

The phase-1 commissioning of the parallel taxi track has increased the runway handling capacity from 10 flights per hour to 14 flights per hour. The capacity will be increased to 17 flights per hour after the completion of the phase-2, he said.

Mangaluru International Airport has been declared as the cleanest and best-maintained airport in the country under 1.5 million to 5 million passenger handling airport category in the survey conducted by AAI among AAI-run airports, Rao said.

Soon Mangaluru airport will introduce app-based cab aggregator service for the benefit of the passengers, he added.
