Soon after filing his nomination for the Gandhinagar Lok Sabha constituency, Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) veteran, L K Advani predicted a clean sweep by the party in key states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar in the upcoming polls.

The former deputy prime minister exhumed confidence in the party’s prime ministerial candidate, Narendra Modi and his election campaigning saying that the Congress would face ‘zero record’ again after 1977 elections.

“In 1977 after the emergency, for the first time the country witnessed a change as Congress lost the elections. In several states the Congress party had scored zero seats and thereby creating a record in itself. I believe that record will be broken this time in many states,” Advani said in his address to the party workers in Ahmedabad later in the evening on Saturday.

He noted that in 1977 elections, the Congress had faced ‘zeros’ in many states including Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, where the Congress had lost all 85 and 54 seats respectively to then Janata Party (an alliance of non-Congress parties).

“It was the party led by a person from the same land of Gujarat, Morarjibhai Desai. I believe this will get repeated this time and Congress will see a repeat of 1977 results. First time in the history, people of this country know the results before it is out,” he said.

Advani, who had filed his nomination earlier in the day in presence of Modi, repeatedly heaped praises on Modi at different forums during the day. The 86-year old party patriarch had called Modi an able administrator, a brilliant event manager and a remarkable leader during his speech earlier in the day. This was seen as a show of unity after the reports of differences between the two.

“I’ve seen all elections since 1952. But never seen such campaigning that we see being done by the BJP under the leadership of Narendrabhai Modi,” added Advani.

Advani inaugurated the party’s constituency office on the Sarkhej-Gandhinagar highway in Ahmedabad on Saturday. He was accompanied by daughter Pratibha Advani, Gujarat revenue minister Anandiben Patel, party leaders, Purushottam Rupala, I K Jadeja, Surendrabhai Patel and Narhari Amin.
