The Indian Coast Guard has based ICGS (Indian Coast Guard Ship) Amartya at the New Mangalore Port Trust. ICGS Amartya is the eighth in the series of 20 in-shore patrol vessels indigenously built by Cochin Shipyard Ltd.
The 50-metre-long vessel displaces 297 tonnes and can achieve a maximum speed of 35 knots.
A press release said the ship will be under the administrative and operational control of the Commander, Coast Guard Region (West), Mumbai. The ship will enhance the capability required for continuous vigil along the Karnataka maritime frontiers.
Modern equipmentEquipped with modern weaponry and advanced communication and navigational equipment, ICGS Amartya makes an ideal platform for undertaking multifarious close-coast missions such as surveillance, interdiction, search and rescue, and medical evacuation, the release added.
CapabilitiesFeatures such as integrated bridge management system, integrated machinery control system and an integrated gun mount with automated control system are capable of knocking down surface and air targets in all weather conditions by day and night, the release said.
ICGS Amartya is commanded by Commandant PK Jaiswal. It has a complement of five officers and 34 other staff members.
