The BJP has had its way in the distribution of chairpersons of Parliamentary standing committees.

The party will head at least 11 department-related standing committees of the Lok Sabha and two of the Rajya Sabha. Apart from that, the BJP will head important panels such as the Estimates Committee and the Committee on Public Undertakings.

The principal Opposition party, the Congress, which had demanded the top post in four Lok Sabha panels, will have to be satisfied with just two — the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) and the Committee on External Affairs. While former Food Minister KV Thomas has been appointed by the Speaker as Chairman of the PAC, former Minister of State of External Affairs Shashi Tharoor is likely to head the Standing Committee on External Affairs.

Announcement soon

Out of the 16 department-related standing committees in the Lok Sabha, the Congress, AIADMK, Biju Janata Dal and Trinamool Congress will get one each.

The Shiv Sena may get one while the BJP is likely to wrest 11 standing committees, including the Finance Committee.

An announcement of the chairpersons and the members in these panels is expected on Tuesday.

Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi has opted to be a member of the External Affairs Committee.

He was a member of the Finance Standing Committee and the Human Resource Development panel in the 15{+t}{+h} and 14{+t}{+h} Lok Sabha, respectively. Congress President Sonia Gandhi will not be a member of any of the panels.

The BJP has nominated its senior leader LK Advani to the Committee on Public Undertakings. Advani, however, is not heading the panel, which will be chaired by former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Shanta Kumar. Another veteran BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi will head the Estimates Committee.

CPI(M) draws blank

In the Rajya Sabha, out of the eight department-related panels, the Congress will get to head three and the BJP two. The Janata Dal (United), Bahujan Samaj Party and Trinamool Congress will get to head one committee each. The CPI(M), which was earlier heading three panels, two from the Lok Sabha and one from the Rajya Sabha, has drawn a blank this time.
