Selling Air India to private players will be a major setback to India’s image and its desire to play a big role internationally, said CPI National Secretary D Raja.
In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he said Air India had filled the vacuum in routes that no other airline operates, to connect NRIs, skilled IT workers working abroad and 70 lakh Indians working in the Gulf. Raja said Air India is a living and expanding entity and is not suffering from a lockout nor is it in a state of inaction. “As a matter of fact, Air India has expanded its international routes and Overseas Indians have greatly appreciated the expansion,” Raja said.
Reminding Modi that he had promised NRIs that Air India will expand its connectivity, he said the Centre has taken such a decision without weighing the social costs. “Government must look at all other options before selling off Air India. The haste with which the government is selling off Air India will do irreversible damage to the country,” he said.
“The vast properties of Air India will fetch poor prices. Not only that, the public will be deprived of a living corporate entity which is looking out for their interests,” he added.
