The BJP appears to be non-committal on according special status to Andhra Pradesh, a promise which the party made on the floor of the Rajya Sabha at the time of bifurcation of the State and also before the 2014 elections, but the party is promising to do something more for the State.

The stand of the party became clear here on Sunday when Health Minister JP Nadda fielded a volley of questions on the issue after the meeting of the State executive of the party. The minister is in charge of the state party unit.

The Union Minister remarked, "Don't get stuck on terminology. What is there in special status ? We will do more for Andhra Pradesh. We are not going back on our commitments to AP. You will get the funds for your various schemes."

The minister said the NDA Government was committed to completing the mega Polavaram project on the Godavari as promised in the bifurcation Bill and several prestigious institutes would be set up in AP including the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences near Vijayawada. The foundation stone for AIIMS would be laid soon, he said.

He said all efforts would be made to strengthen the party in the State and the party was also having excellent relations witht the Telugu Desam party. "There is perfect synergy between the BJP and TDP in Andhra Pradesh. We will work together for the welfare of the people of the State," he added.

Visakhapatnam member of Parliament K. Haribabu, also the State BJP president, participated in the event.
