A police officer was injured when an angry mob threw stones and forced the shutting of shops in Surat’s Diamond City, where the chopped head of a calf was found at a busy crossing on Monday morning.
As slogan-shouting inflamed religious sentiments further, police fired over 30 tear-gas shells and resorted to lathi-charge to disperse the angry mob. Around 50 rioters, including some Bajrang Dal activists, were taken into preventive detention as they allegedly set on fire a couple of meat shops.
In view of the situation, various markets observed a bandh with traders downing shutters soon after opening for the day.
Police said the trouble began when some people found the carcass at Maharana Pratap Chowk in Godadara area. “We had to burst tear-gas shells and resort to lathi-charge to bring the situation under control,” said Police Commissioner Satish Sharma.
Police also conducted a flag-march in the affected areas.
