There is a constitutional crisis in Karnataka and the President should step in and show the way, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said here on Thursday.
The Trinamool Congress supremo said the party or coalition with the most number of MLAs should have been given the first opportunity to form the government or prove a majority on the floor of the Vidhana Soudha.
The Congress-JD(S) coalition currently has 116 MLAs, while BJP has 104 in the 224-member Karnataka Legislative Assembly.
“I am always for regional parties. And the [HD] Kumaraswamy-Congress alliance should have been given the first opportunity to form the government. They claim to have the numbers. However, there is a constitutional crisis in Karnataka now, and I urge the President to show us the way,” Banerjee said, during a press conference at the State Secretariat.
She claimed to be in touch with various regional parties and leaders like Telugu Desam Party’s N Chandrababu Naidu and the BSP’s Mayawati on the matter.
