Homeopathic and Unani doctors in Maharashtra can practice Allopathic medicine if they undergo a one-year course in Allopathic Pharmacology.

Towards this end, the State Government would be amending the Maharashtra Medical Practitioners Act by August.

State Medical Education Minister, Mr Vijay Kumar Gavit told the Legislative Assembly on Friday that currently it is not legally possible to allow non-allopathic doctors to practice a stream of medicine, which they have not studied. But an ordinance amending the act would be promulgated next month, which will qualify them to practise Allopathy, he said.

Calling attention notice

Replying to a calling attention notice on the issue of Homeopathic doctors wanting to practice Allopathy, Mr Gavit said that after undergoing the one-year course, these doctors will have clear the qualifying examination.

He added that the New Delhi-based Homeopathy Council would be requested to include the subject of Allopathic Pharmacology in the Homeopathy syllabus.

Savings lives

Mr Vijay Wadettiwar, Congress MLA, said Homeopathic doctors based in rural areas treat patients in remote locations, saving lives of countless people. However, they face legal problems because of certain anomalies in the current law. Many a time it has been observed that these rural doctors undergo hardship but still treat patients selflessly, he said.
