Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari had a close shave before landing at Haldia this morning after the blades of the helicopter he was flying in got stuck in the red carpet laid out for his welcome there.
Gadkari was at Haldia, about 150 km from here, to inaugurate a biodiesel facility at the port. He later came back to Kolkata to attend a party meet and a seminar.
According to senior Port Trust officials, the red carpet laid out at the helipad got entangled in the chopper blades.
“The carpet got dislodged from the ground due to sudden wind. There was no fault either on part of the arrangement or on the part of the pilot,” Kolkata Port Trust, which runs the Haldia Dock System, said in a statement.
Gadkari downplayed the incident, tweeting: “All passengers on board helicopter to Haldia are safe. Really appreciate the concerns and well wishes expressed.”
