After crossing several hurdles, Kamal Haasan starrer Uttama Villain opened today.

The film, scheduled to release on May 1, was unexpectedly cancelled on that morning, following issues between the producer of the film and financiers.

“After a marathon meeting that lasted for over 24 hours, we finally sorted out the issue amicably, and the orders have been issued to release the movie today,” said actor Sarath Kumar, who is the President of South India Film Artists’ Association.

Talking to the media after the ‘marathon’ meeting, at noon today, he said Film Artists’ Association, Distributors Association and Film Producers’ Council have come together to help the producer of the film Lingusamy of Thirupathi Brothers, and the financiers, to iron out the issues and reach an agreement. Though he refused to elaborate on the actual issue, industry sources said the producer could not pay back Rs 30 crore he borrowed from the financiers, which lead to the cancellation of the movie’s release on May 1.

The movie was released in West Asia and in some other countries as scheduled. Directed by Ramesh Aravind, Uthama Villain is being distributed world wide by Eros International.

Earlier Vishwa Hindu Parishad moved the Madras High Court seeking a stay on the release of the movie as the lyrics of a song in the film would hurt the feelings of the Hindu community. However, the court dismissed the writ petition saying there was no merit in it.
