The 2025–26 state budget also earmarks ₹200 crore for the LEAP program to boost local economies in non-Bengaluru cities.
The Karnataka government has announced plans to fill 35,000 vacant posts in the electricity transmission department in a phased manner. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah also stated that, in addition, 532 civic workers in the department would be regularised.
This development follows several job-related assurances made by Siddaramaiah over the past five months. Earlier in March, he said that the government was working to create five lakh jobs over the next five years. The Karnataka Budget for 2025–26 has allocated ₹200 crore out of the ₹1,000 crore budget to launch the LEAP (Local Economy Accelerator Program) in cities outside Bengaluru.
The government also projects attracting ₹7.5 lakh crore in investments and creating 20 lakh jobs over the next five years. It is also focused on scaling up merchandise exports by leveraging Free Trade Warehousing Zones, export-oriented industrial parks, and faster port access.
Speaking to the media at the inauguration of the Diamond Jubilee celebration of the Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Employees’ Association, where he also released the commemorative issue Vajra Jyoti Smarana, Siddaramaiah said, “Ours is a government that walks the talk. We will examine your demands and take necessary action. The National Pension Scheme (NPS) was implemented by the central government. We have already committed to implementing the Old Pension Scheme (OPS) in our manifesto. We will discuss this and take necessary steps.”
He added, “We are working toward supplying seven hours of daytime electricity for farmers, agriculture, and pump sets. This will become possible once we reach the target of 60,000 megawatts of power generation.”
