Encouraged by the progress made in its ‘Automotive Safety Innovation’ project with Intel India – along with Mobileye, an Intel company – as its technology advisor, the Karnataka government has announced its commitment and vision in making Karnataka roads safer for its citizens.

The state government highlighted how the technology from Mobileye and Intel along with the data sets captured from the ‘Automotive Safety Innovation’ project could be leveraged by the high technology ecosystem, including start-ups, to help Karnataka achieve the highest level of road safety in India.

In the first phase of the project, potential accident spots were identified in the eastern part of Bengaluru using school buses equipped with Mobileye’s Collision Avoidance Systems (CAS). These systems have vision analytics that provide real-time warnings of potential collisions, giving the driver enough time to react and avoid or mitigate the accident altogether. Areas with a high volume of warnings have been coined as ‘Grey Spots’ and will provide state authorities sufficient information to improve the road safety infrastructure.

This data can be leveraged by city planners, the traffic department, and state agencies to provide remedial measures to significantly bring down the possibility of accidents and road fatalities in Karnataka, thereby, enhancing commuter, pedestrian and vehicle safety. In November 2017, the state government announced the ‘Automotive Safety Innovation’ project to boost technology development towards safer commutes in the state.

Priyank Kharge, Karnataka Minister for Innovation and Technology & Tourism, said, “Karnataka is committed to improving road safety in the state and saving lives of people. Our goal is to reduce road fatalities and accidents on Karnataka roads by 30 per cent in the next five years. In order to achieve this objective, we are strengthening our collaboration with Intel and Mobileye, a leader in the world of computer vision and machine learning for autonomous driving, to develop this road safety and real-time driver assist solution, enabling us to save lives on Karnataka roads.”

"Mobileye and Intel's commitment to Karnataka road safety has rapidly moved to its practical phase. We look forward to widening the reach of our real-time collision avoidance and mapping capabilities for motorists, pedestrians and all road users. We commend this visionary initiative by the Karnataka government," said Elad Serfaty, Vice-President & General Manager of the Aftermarket Division at Mobileye, an Intel company.

Nivruti Rai, Country Head, Intel India and Vice-President, Data Centre Group, Intel said: “We are proud to work with Karnataka in its visionary initiative to increase automotive road safety, and to enable the start-up and innovators’ community. We (Intel and Mobileye) are committed to delivering and scaling technology for use cases that are important for India and look forward to collaborating with the government in other emerging areas as well.”
