The Kerala State Centre of Institution of Engineers (India) (IEI) will create a database of unemployed engineers and of those who have completed the course but have a backlog of uncleared papers.

This is only the beginning of a massive drive that attempts to improve the skill levels of students in their respective technology areas and assess employability, the IEI said.

OVERALL ASSESSMENT

The IEI will seek to make an overall assessment of 'a worrisome situation' and make suitable recommendations, to be submitted for the state government's consideration.

Interested engineering graduates and those with a backlog of uncleared papers have been directed to e-mail their details or call in at the numbers given below:

E-mail: ieikscyp@gmail.com

Phone (landline): 0471-2322991 or 2322992

Cell: 9497501812 (Vijayachandran P) or 9446004363 (Udayakumar KS)

Only 14 per cent of engineering students who enrol pass out every year, said KS Udayakumar, Honorary Secretary, and N Rajkumar, Chairman, of the Kerala State Center of the IEI.

JOBLESS ENGINEERS

There are 162 engineering colleges in Kerala with a total capacity of 62,700 seats. During 2015-16, 41,191 students were admitted to various courses, of which 11,210 have found jobs.

This means that at least 30,000 are still seeking suitable placements. A perusal of the scenario of the past many years indicates that this number has been on a rising trend.

Udayakumar and Rajkumar said even for those who have cleared all their papers, there is a dire need to improve skillsets in order to survive the 'tough competition out there.'

They will be tested intensely for their grasp of the fundamentals of their areas of study rather than their capacity to come to terms with new technology.

The IEI is a collective of expert engineering minds cutting across the spectrum, which draws on the rich experience and track record of at least 100 years, Udayakumar and Rajkumar said.
