India Met Department (IMD) has notified the possibility of a monsoon depression forming in the Bay of Bengal even as the Arabian Sea prospectively serves up a tropical cyclone.

A preparatory low-pressure area is likely to form over South Bay of Bengal and neighbourhood around Monday. It may intensify into a depression and move towards the Odisha coast.

Widespread rainfall

The depression is expected to make a landfall over the Odisha coast around the same time as the building cyclone in the Arabian Sea reaches the Oman coast, as per initial indications.

Under the circumstances, widespread rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely to occur over Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Lakshadweep during the week ending October 10.

Fairly widespread rainfall is also very likely to occur over Coastal and South Interior Karnataka during most days of this week. Isolated heavy to very heavy with extremely heavy falls are also likely to occur over Tamil Nadu and Kerala on Sunday.

Isolated to scattered rainfall is forecast over the rest of the southern Peninsula, Konkan, Goa and Madhya Maharashtra during most days of this week.

Fairly widespread rainfall with isolated heavy rainfall is forecast North Coastal Andhra Pradesh and coastal areas of Odisha and West Bengal towards end of the week.

Rain outlook

To the North, approaching western disturbances will bring isolated to scattered precipitation over Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh during most days of the week. Isolated to scattered rainfall is also likely over the North-Eastern States, hills of Bengal and Sikkim during this period.

Overall, rainfall activity is likely to be above normal over most parts of peninsular, west India and Jammu and Kashmir and below normal over North-East, East and adjoining Central India.

During the subsequent week (October 11 to 17), rainfall activity is likely to be normal to above normal over most parts of the country.
