Goa BJP today accused anti-Mopa airport activists of politicising the issue about the greenfield airport, which they said was necessary for the state.

“Some elements are misguiding the people on Mopa airport issue. Mopa airport is a necessity for the state,” said BJP Goa spokesman Damodar Naik addressing media persons today.

He said that few Congress leaders were politicising the issue by misguiding the activists.

The opposition for proposed greenfield airport at Mopa has been gaining grounds in the state with a public rally being organised tomorrow in Margao town to express their opposition to the new airport, fearing that the greenfield airport would force shutdown of existing Dabolim airport, which is managed by Indian Navy.

Naik alleged that Congress party has been raising this issue at the time when Lok Sabha election is scheduled next year.

The BJP leader refused to comment when pointed out that the Church in Goa has also been opposing the greenfield project.

Naik rubbished the demand of activists to move Naval base from Dabolim.

“The Naval base at Dabolim is crucial for the security of the country. We can’t take a risk with the nation’s security considering the increasing threat from rivals including China,” he stated.

Naik said that the state government has already assured that seven kilometres radius land would be frozen for the development purpose.

“Government is always open for discussion with the activists if they have any issues about the new airport,” he added.
