DMK chief M. Karunanidhi was laid to rest on the Marina Beach in Chennai on Wednesday beside his mentor, Dravidian ideologue and former chief minister C.N. Annadurai.
The former chief minister was accorded a state funeral with gun salute from the three wings of the armed forces.
The last journey of the DMK chief, who passed away on Tuesday, began at 4 pm from Rajaji Hall, where his mortal remains were placed for public viewing. A sea of emotional party workers and supporters followed the hearse for about two kilometres waving party flags and black flags.
DMK working president and son M.K. Stalin walked along with the the gun carriage that was carrying Karunanidhi's body.
Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit, Congress president Rahul Gandhi, Union Minister Pon. Radhakrishnan, Tamil Nadu Minister D. Jayakumar, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, were among those present in the funeral.
Earlier in the day, the Madras High Court cleared the decks for allowing Karunanidhi's burial on the Marina after the Tamil Nadu government refused to give permission on Tuesday citing "legal hurdles." The Supreme Court too refused to entertain a plea seeking directions to disallow the burial on the Beach.
