Production was suspended for the day in units housed in the Jawaharlal Nehru Pharma City at Parawada in Visakhapatnam district on Wednesday as tension gripped the area in view of an indefinite fast launched by a Telugu Desam leader, Mr B. Satyanarayana Murthy, seeking a solution to certain local problems.
He launched the fast on Monday, demanding steps to curb pollution caused by the units in pharma city, jobs for fishermen hit by the pharma city in a nearby village (Mutyalammapalem), and relocation of Tadi village adjoining the pharma city, as life had become unbearable for the residents due to pollution. He threatened the authorities that he would immolate himself if they tried to break his fast forcibly.
On the third day of the fast, the villagers intensified their agitation and prevented employees from going in. There was heavy police deployment in the area. Several rounds of talks failed to break the deadlock.
