Wind turbine maker Suzlon has won a contract from Surat Municipal Corporation to set up an 8.4-MW wind energy project in Gujarat. However, the financial details of the contract were not disclosed.

Under the contract, the Pune-based company will set up, operate and maintain the project, which comprises four units of its own S95-2.1 MW turbines. The project will be commissioned in early 2013 (calendar year), the company said in a statement.

“We are proud to be a part of Gujarat’s strategy to create a future-ready low carbon economy and look forward to strengthening this relationship in future. Suzlon has been a market leader in India for the past 13 years in a row. In Gujarat, we have installed over 1.5 GW and has built the largest wind farm in the country at Kutch,” Suzlon Energy CEO (India and emerging markets) Rohit Modi said.

This is the second consecutive order for the Pune-based company from Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) and this was awarded through a tender process.

The new project will augment the civic body’s existing wind power portfolio to 11.4 MW. Once commissioned, the project will help it to reduce its carbon footprint by eliminating about 15,000 tonnes of carbon-di-oxide emissions per annum.

Suzlon Group is ranked as the world’s fifth largest wind turbine supplier in terms of cumulative installed capacity as of 2011.

Surat Municipal Corporation is the first civic body to set up a wind power project in the country. Earlier, Suzlon had supplied a 3-MW wind power project in 2010 to SMC in Adodar, Gujarat.
