Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Puri on Thursday launched Swachh Survekshan League 2020. It will be conducted in three quarters of 2019 and the final quarter in 2020.

The results of the League will form part of Swachh Survekshan 2020, the 5th edition of the annual cleanliness survey of urban India to be conducted in January-February 2020.

“Every year, the Swachh Survekshan is redesigned innovatively, to ensure that the process becomes more robust, with focus on sustaining the changed behaviours,” Puri said, adding that it was seen that the cities were mostly cleaned up just before the survey and subsequently slipped down in cleanliness, which was a major concern. Now ‘Continuous Surveksha’ is being launched for cleanliness assessments throughout the year, he added. In the Swachh Survekshan League 2020, wastewater treatment, reuse and faecal sludge management will be given special focus, said a statement.

The performance of cities in Swachh Survekshan League 2020 will be crucial to their ranking in Swachh Survekshan 2020 due to the 25 per cent weightage of the quarterly assessments to be included in the annual survey in January 2020.
