Innovation in applications of glycerine has won a US award for B.L.A. Prabhavathi Devi, a scientist of the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, here.
Her research has shown how crude glycerol obtained as a by-product of biodiesel process can be converted to carbon catalysts for green processes.
These catalysts have been, in turn, employed for the production of biodiesel by replacing traditionally used homogeneous sulfuric acid and alkali catalysts.
In short, the entire process becomes economically more profitable, said a press release from the Hyderabad-based Institute.
Prabhavathi Devi, a Principal Scientist at the research laboratory received the award sponsored by the American Cleaning Institute and the National Biodiesel Board recently.
The award includes a plaque and a $5,000 honorarium. Prabhavathi Devi’s work has won her several national awards in the recent past.
