The country is witnessing growing cyber crime ranging from fraud calls to malwares that bring banking systems to a standstill.

India was one of the worst hit countries by the WannaCry ransomware malware affecting sectors such as banking, finance and manufacturing last year. To combat this, the government is coming up with more cyber security labs.

Inderbir Singh, AIG — Policy & Rules, Additional Charge of AIG & IT (Social Media), Punjab , told BusinessLine on the sidelines of an industry event on digitial e-governance held on Tuesday: “Cyber attacks have grown in terms of sophistication and reach in the recent times.”

Steps to tackle

The initiatives by the government such as launch of Digital Investigation Training and Analysis Centre (DITAC) are the steps to tackle these crimes. The government launched its first DITAC in Gurugram, Haryana in 2016 in collaboration with National Technical Research Organisation (NTRO). The second one is being set up in Mohali, Punjab.

Singh said: “With new resources and tools in hand, the Police department is gearing up to combat the rising toll of bank and ATM frauds. The department recently recruited 400 personnel, many of them with technical background. We select people and will train them in cyber crime monitoring,”.

DITACs are equipped with state-of-art facilities with sophisticated tools to monitor and police cyber crimes committed through different platforms such as mobile, email, computer and social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook. In addition, these centres provide training to the police officials on tackling cyber crimes. Currently the training is provided in collaboration with third parties. The idea is to have train-the-trainer programme to have the training in-house.

Apart from DITACs, the government also established National Cyber Coordination Centre, an operational cyber security and e-surveillance agency in India. National Informatics Centre opened the fourth new data centre in Bhubaneswar, the second largest after the one in New Delhi, recently.
