Noted Sanskrit scholar and former Director of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Mr Mathoor Krishnamurthi (82), passed away after a brief illness at a hospital here today.
Mr Krishnamurthi, a Padma Shri awardee, was admitted to the hospital at 2.30 a.m. after he complained of chest pain.
He breathed his last at 5.30 a.m, Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan Director (Programmes and Projects), Mr H. N. Suresh, said. His body has been kept at the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan here for people to pay their last respects, he said.
Mr Krishnamurthi's funeral would be conducted at his native village Mathoor in Shimoga district tomorrow, Mr Suresh said. Born on August 8, 1929, Mr Krishnamurthi grew up to become a multifaceted personality. He had worked as a reporter and sub-editor in Kannada daily Samyukta Karnataka , a release said.
