Biggest challenge for the sector in 2013

In my opinion, the biggest challenge in our industry still remains around increasing meaningful usage of technology in the country While we are doing exceedingly well in exporting IT solution and services, our own adoption and usage of technology is extremely limited and superficial. A key factor is the lack of awareness around what good technology can do to improve people’s lives in general. Usage of technology is still largely an urban phenomenon in India and if we really want to leverage technology for growth and development we have to take it beyond urban cities and therein lies the challenge. We have to figure out effective ways to create relevant awareness and drive higher innovation at the bottom of the pyramid to make devices more intuitive and develop more localized solutions that will address the literacy and local language barriers and offer solutions/usage models that are relevant to the user’s lifestyle. A small beginning has been made in the form of the National Digital Literacy Mission but we have miles to go before we can start delivering far reaching real impact on-ground!

One positive thing you expect to happen in 2014

Innovation in the computer industry is accelerating like never before. Consumers have never seen so much choice in personal devices. The PC has come a long way and now exists in a huge range of form factors, from smartphones, to tablets, clamshell laptops, Ultrabooks, 2 in 1s and all-in-ones. Soon; wearable technology. In addition, computing devices will get more and more intuitive with the advent of perceptual computing. I do believe that we are at the cusp of a revolution which will see computing becoming relevant to users across the socio-economic period. In India, it will mean the beginning of technology being used as a means to provide access to education, healthcare, financial and Govt services to all citizen. Which in turn will drive us closer to achieving the dream of inclusive growth.
