US President Barack Obama early on Tuesday signed into law a provision for the US military to continue being paid despite a forced shutdown of many Government services.
“Those of you in uniform will remain on your normal duty status,” Obama told the troops in a video message, and reassured them they would have what they need to succeed in their missions.
Congress failed to approve a budget for the fiscal year starting on Tuesday, and Obama acknowledged that the “days ahead could mean more uncertainty, including possible furloughs” for civilian employees.
“The threats to our national security have not changed, and we need you to be ready for any contingency,” he said. “Ongoing military operations, like our efforts in Afghanistan, will continue.”
