Whimsical drama The Grand Budapest Hotel and musical film Whiplash are the early winners at the 87th Academy Awards, taking home two trophies apiece including sound mixing and costume design, among others.
Whiplash earned J.K. Simmons the Oscar in the best supporting actor category.
“Wow, thank you Academy and everyone involved with Whiplash I am grateful everyday for the most wonderful person I know, my wife...,” Simmons said.
The movie also scored an Academy for its achievement in sound mixing. Craig Mann, Ben Wilkins and Thomas Curley were the recipients.
The Grand Budapest Hotel started its Oscar run with two technical awards – achievement in costume design and make-up and hairstyling.
While Milena Canonero bagged her fourth Oscar for providing an attractive ensemble to the cast of the Wes Anderson-directed film, Frances Hannon and Mark Coulier scored the Oscar for achievement in make-up and hairstyling.
Mat Kirklby and James Lucas received the best live action short film Oscar for the British drama The Phone Call .
It starred Sally Hawkins as Heather, a crisis hotline counsellor trying to dissuade Stanley (Jim Broadbent), a distraught caller, from a suicide attempt following the death of his wife.
Crisis Hotline: Veterans Press 1 won the Oscar for the best documentary short subject. Director Ellen Goosenberg Kent and producer Dana Perry were the recipients.
Patrick Osbourne and Kristina Reed won the best animated short film award for Feast .
Paul Franklin, Andrew Lockley, Ian Hunter and Scott Fisher earned the Academy for achievement in visual effects for Christopher Nolan’s science-fiction drama Interstellar .
