Music director Ilayaraja sending legal notices to SP Balasubrahmaniam and other singers is shocking. Ilayaraja must understand that his songs would not have become hits had SPB and others not sung them. Singers add value to composers. Moreover, singers have always shown their appreciation of great music directors.

SPB is a great singer. Ilaiyaraaja is a great music director. Ilaiyaraaja has no reason to feel offended when his compositions are performed by SPB, Chithra and Charan without his permission. If he was so particular, he should have widely publicised the fact that he doesn’t want anybody singing his compositions. .

Singer KJ Jesudas once made a his demand was rejected outright by singers and the general public. Ilaiyaraja’s demand is unfortunate and unbecoming of an artist of his stature.

Leave IDBI alone
This is with reference to ‘Government swaps chief executves of IDBI Bank and Indian Bank’ by KR Srivats (March 20). IDBI Bank has an operational set up different from that of other PSBs.
Its journey since the time it was conceived as a development financial institution (DFI) and eventual conversion into a commercial bank is historic. Its corporatisation into IDBI Ltd, floating a wholly owned banking arm followed by a forward merger with the parent, acquisition of United Western Bank Ltd, working along the lines of strategic business units then and being restructured into many verticals are beyond the comprehension of an ordinary banker. The bank still carries the legacy of a DFI.
The bank has been playing a pivotal role in the socio-economic development of the country and has the potential to alter the economy. Therefore, it deserves to enjoy separate and special status as a development bank and shouldn’t be compared to any other PSB..

Unique ruling
By granting bail to the IDBI chairman and the MD and directing the CBI that since it has already filed a chargesheet against the two officials, there is no need for their further ‘detention’, Justice Jadhav of the Bombay High Court has sent an important signal. He has squarely blamed the entire board of IDBI for the loans granted to Kingfisher Airlines, and not just the top officials of the bank, because the amount involved — ₹900 crore — was so huge. This unique decision in respect of NPAs should open the eyes of the boards of other PSBs in India.

Landmark tragedy
It is unfortunate that the 108-year-old Theosophical Society in Malleswaram has been brought down as it was deemed decrepit and unsafe. Old-timers will recall that TS was a rare repository of knowledge. The foundation for the building was laid by the Dr Annie Besant and it is a witness to the turbulent history of southern India. The government and other large-hearted individuals should come forward to save this heritage institution.

Wait and watch
This refers to the front-page photograph, ‘Looking UPbeat’ by Rajeev Bhatt (March 20). It seems as if the BJP has taken a gamble by appointing Yogi Adityanath as chief minister, but when Narendra Modi was appointed as the BJP’s PM nominee in 2014, the Opposition had the same feeling about him. Adityanath may have the image of a polarising firebrand, but it is too early to pass judgment.
This is one CM whose performance will be keenly watched not only by the Opposition but by the BJP as well as it cannot afford to let this crucial State slip out of its hand. It would like to consolidate its position from here. Hopefully Adityanath will also keep the larger picture in mind rather than just propagating the Hindutva agenda, as only good governance and development can help the BJP.
