Ruksana peeps out of the classroom, curious to take a look at the visitors to her school. She is one of the girl children who have been lucky to be sent to school in Haryana’s Mewat region, home to the Meo Muslims, a community that has been trying to improve its socio-economic status.
“The number of girls in government schools is slowly increasing, but we need to incentivise families to see even more girls out of their homes and in front of blackboards,” says the principal.
